Indian State 'Cyber Police' Targets Platforms for Adult Content

MUMBAI — The Cyber Police agency of the Indian state of Maharashtra — the region that includes populous Mumbai — has formally accused several platforms of “transmitting sexually explicit and obscene content online.”

According to a Times of India report, “seven over-the-top (OTT) services, including Ekta Kapoor-founded Alt Balaji, and two web portals have been booked by Maharashtra Cyber.”

A First Information Report (FIR), or booking document, was registered by Maharashtra Cyber against “platforms Hotshot, Ullu/Hotmasti, Chikooflix, Kukoo, Primeflix, Flizmovies/Neoflix/Feneo" and adult tube sites Xvideos and Pornhub.

Inspector General of Police Yashasvi Yadav of Maharashtra Cyber — a nodal agency for cyber security and cybercrime investigation for the second-most populous state in India, with jurisdiction over Mumbai — said that "the videos uploaded on these platforms and portals have not been certified by any certifying agency. It is likely that the actresses in these videos have been exploited, lured or compelled to perform the obscene acts. We will be treating the actresses as ‘victims’ and not ‘accused persons.’”

Maharashtra Cyber is asking all these services, including Pornhub and XVideos, “to pull down the content, failing which Maharashtra Cyber would consider blocking it.”
